2011 Intern Testimonials
Kea Turner, Summer 2011
Over the past summer, I worked with the Zone Health Team at NC Prevention Partners (NCPP) as a special project intern where I had the opportunity to apply what I have learned from my graduate education to practice. In addition to gaining hands-on experience in program planning, I greatly benefited from the expertise of my co-workers and fellow interns, who provided ongoing support and feedback for my work. My mentor also helped me to apply my interests in youth-advocacy research to design a proposal for a photovoice project on school nutrition for high school youth. For any student in search of an internship, I would highly recommend NCPP. As an intern, you will receive strong mentorship and training, feel valued and supported, and have the opportunity to join a team, whose passion and dedication to health and wellness, motivates you to put forth your best effort.
Allison Schmidt, Summer 2011
I am an MPH student at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and, for my practicum, worked as an intern on the Quit-tobacco Team. I also had the opportunity to participate in the NCPP Wellness Committee, a committee internal to NCPP that promotes wellness opportunities for staff members. On the Quit-Tobacco team, I was involved with several projects helping hospitals in NC, SC, and NYC go tobacco-free property-wide and support tobacco cessation opportunities for their employees and patients. I was further charged with identifying and communicating how our work at the hospital level integrated with that of current national programs and policies. With the Wellness Committee, I prepared two one-pagers promoting existing wellness benefits available to NCPP staff members, and helped coordinate the in-office Strength Training Wellness Challenge during the month of July in which staff participated.
I have greatly enjoyed my time at NCPP. Everyone at the office was such a pleasure to work with, I was closely mentored, and I was genuinely treated as a part of the NCPP team. In addition to working on several exciting projects with the Quit-Tobacco Team, being in an organization in which workplace wellness was not only promoted to other organizations but also made an integral part of every workday, was a unique and wonderful experience. I really appreciate the experience I have gained in driving organizational-level change in hospitals and in working as part of a committed and passionate team.

I am a graduate student at the UNC School of Public Health and joined NC Prevention Partners in January 2011. I was part of the Quit Tobacco team and was primarily responsible for researching and educating my team members about Meaningful Use. This is a concept in healthcare information technology and is tied to millions of dollars of incentive money being available for hospitals. Tobacco screening is one of the core objective criteria that hospitals are required to fulfill in order to receive this money. It was crucial for us to understand Meaningful Use so we could continue to stimulate tobacco use policy change in hospitals. By the end of the semester, I was able to educate my team, and present before other NCPP staff and also before the NCPP board members. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to leverage my clinical and healthcare background to help with other important projects.
I enjoyed my time with NC Prevention Partners. My internship gave me a comprehensive view of prevention and policy in public health. I had an opportunity to further improve my presentation, writing and organizational skills. The staff was very approachable. They are dedicated to providing interns with a rich educational experience. My future career goals include starting my own healthcare consulting business and the exposure I gained at NC Prevention Partners will certainly help me in that pursuit.
