Lesley Farber, Winter 2004

"It has been a pleasure to work here for a brief, yet intensive, month. From the first day I arrived, I have been inspired by the dedication each staff member devotes to improving the health of North Carolinians as well as the burgeoning success of NCPP. This internship provided me my first introduction to the field of public health on a state level."

Lesley assisted in the enrollment phase of Quit for Life, the media release of the 2005 Prevention Report Card, the design and Spanish translation of both the Nutrition and Physical Activity Starting the Conversation Tools, and generation of ideas for the newly implemented, NCPP Wellness Committee.

Kristy Lowther, Fall 2004

“I’ve always found that the best work experiences are those where I am given the opportunity to do more than just filing paperwork, making copies, and other general office work. That's one of the things I enjoyed most about interning with NCPP -- I was given responsibility and opportunities to expand my knowledge, encouraged to take on new projects, and challenged on a regular basis.”

Kristy graduated in December of 2004 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She has been interning with NCPP since September of 2004, beginning in a volunteer position, where she worked heavily on developing the Quit for Life program. She moved into a paid position in January of 2005 where she has been working on Quit Now NC! and Quit Now Win Now, developing a new tracking database for our Starting the Conversation tools (STCs), and coordinating the development of the new Prevention Rx regional training workshops.

Jennifer Hastings Summer/Fall 2004

“Although I have only been with NCPP for a short amount of time, I have felt very welcomed by everyone. I also feel like my volunteering experience has and will be a terrific learning experience both in terms of practice and in terms of learning more about the various organizations involved in NC PH initiatives.”

Matt Huemmer, Summer 2004

“NCPP fosters an entrepreneurial spirit uncharacteristic of most public health agencies. Projects move from concept to implementation at a rate comparable to the most progressive organizations. This attitude has allowed NCPP to retain a flexible structure and an incredible speed to market. I have enjoyed the opportunity to step into a position largely self-defined and drive its success based upon my ability to respond.”

Matt worked primarily in the area of fund development. He developed and presented a strategic plan for the Independence Campaign, researched a comprehensive list of the top 200 potential donating institutions, and set up meetings with leaders from donating organizations. Matt outlined the Endowment Campaign and forecasted revenues over a seven-year period based on growth goals. He also created the Prevention 1st brochure, developed a business model for the Prevention Portfolio and created an Excel Report Card model for organizational evaluation. Finally, Matt had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Summit as well as Quit Now, Win Now training at Roberson County Health Department.

Wes Joines, Summer 2004

“I am grateful for the kind and caring health experts at NCPP who served as mentors to me during my internship.”

During the summer of 2004, Wes worked with BASIC and assisted in developing the prevention portfolio that included creating physical activity directories. Wes also worked as a fundraiser for NCPP by contacting dozens of United Way agencies across the state. Finally, Wes is running a marathon in East Lyme, CT on October 24th to raise money for NC Prevention Partners. His goal is to raise $1,000, and he already has commitments of $460.

Jaya Neal, Summer 2004

"Interning at NC Prevention Partners was an exciting and educational experience. The wide range of projects I was involved with, everything from drafting grant proposals, to creating a large database, has given me valuable experience that will be useful throughout my career. My internship has made me very excited about working in the field of public health!"

During the summer of 2004, Jaya contributed to several important projects at NCPP. She put together a comprehensive nutrition resource directory for the Winner's Circle Dining Program, assisted with a March of Dimes grant proposal, and attended business meetings in Warren and Cumberland Counties while promoting physical activity and better nutrition in schools with the Healthy Schools, Healthy Weight Program. Lastly, she assisted with the Quit Now NC! Annual Conference 2004 by drafting PowerPoint presentations and preparing promotional products.

Will Maixner, Summer 2004, Spring 2007

“This internship was an experience that won’t be forgotten. The work and mission of NCPP are great assets to NC.”

Will worked on internal development, the Diabetes Collaborative, and Quit Now! NC. He developed a five-year report of NCPP’s accomplishments, compiled materials for the Diabetes Summit Meeting, and wrote summaries for the NCPP e-letter. He also went on business trips to Warren, Pamlico, and Lenoir Counties to help promote physical activity, better nutrition, and smoking cessation. Finally, he helped publish Spanish versions of the Starting the Conversation brochures and took care of signage and exhibits for the Quit Now NC! Annual Conference.

Alex Sheng, Summer 2004

“The most important thing I learned from my experience with NCPP is that although looking at the big picture is important, it is the little things that make a difference.”

Throughout his summer with NCPP, Alex dedicated himself to the success of Quit Now NC!. He started his work by tracking down, reviewing, and recommending smoking cessation videos for close-circuit in-hospital television. He also worked with the NC Alliance for Health in advocating the $.75 tobacco tax increase project provided opportunities for him to talk to legislators at the NC State Legislature. Alex also helped with the Quit Now NC! Annual Conference by drafting letters and contacting speakers. Alex also visited Pamlico and Lenoir Counties to work on the Quit Now! NC and Winner’s Circle Healthy Dining programs.

Elizabeth Zimmerman, Summer 2004

“This summer experience has helped me more clearly define a career direction.”

Elizabeth started her summer at NCPP by conducting the research portion of the NC Prevention Partners Report Card. She then put together a comprehensive collection of assessment templates for GSK. Furthermore, she collected data for the cardiovascular health plan. Lastly, she accompanied Jaya, David, and Kim on the trip to Cumberland County to review plans for school obesity toolkit.
