Schools play an important role in the fight against obesity. The Zone Health School Obesity Prevention Program was designed to support the unique needs and priorities of diverse school communities. At present, 25 district and school teams from across the state have been trained to use Zone Health, bringing school wellness and obesity prevention initiatives to over 76,000 students, faculty, and staff.

“Zone Health is a great asset to schools and always complements the priorities that we are working on.”

Cabarrus County Child Nutrition Director

There are many benefits to using Zone Health in your school or district. Students achieve more in the classroom when they are healthy and fit. We are committed to helping schools create a culture of wellness that easily aligns with their academic priorities. Our trainings and materials are tailored for use by both School Health Advisory Councils (SHACs) and school-level wellness teams. The tools and resources provided are appropriate for use with students K-12.

After enrollment, we provide free training on how to use our tools, guide you in securing commitment (School or District Level) from your leaders and connect you with valuable resources and tools. We have ensured that scientific evidence as well as state and national requirements and recommendations are at the heart of our materials and program assessments.

It is important to us that your school wellness efforts be recognized. Even the smallest change can make a huge difference in the health of your students and staff. As you work to improve your school wellness, we’ll shine the light on your success. District and school teams who succeed in building a healthy campus will be eligible to receive a $1,000 Zone Health Award. Simply complete the Zone Health Assessment and download the graded report and recommendations. These reports and resources will guide your team in making healthy changes at your school. When you earn straight A’s in each module (Policy & Supports, Physical Activity, School Foods, and Health Education and PE), you’ll be invited to submit an application for the Zone Health Award and be celebrated at our Annual Meeting in Chapel Hill, NC.

The Zone Health program is supported by the NC State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction as a valuable program to help establish healthy environments, policies, and programs at schools, as outlined in the following resolution. Thanks to generous support from GlaxoSmithKline Community Partnerships Zone Health will continue to support schools in making changes for healthier students and staff.
