NC Prevention Partners continues to work with NC hospitals to increase referrals to QuitlineNC. The fourth annual NC Hospitals Quitline Champion Challenge began on July 1, 2011. The Challenge was initiated to increase awareness of the NC Tobacco Use Quitline and encourages hospitals to refer patients, employees and visitors to QuitlineNC using the Fax Referral Form. At the end of the year, the large, medium, and small hospitals in the state with the highest referrals to QuitlineNC are recognized at NC Prevention Partners Annual Meeting to honor their accomplishment. Using the fax referral to QuitlineNC is the only way to guarantee follow up with a tobacco user interested in quitting. Specially trained counselors will suppport participants in quitting. By receiving such counseling, people double their chances of successfully quitting.
Throughout each challenge year, NC Prevention Partners holds four Mini-Quitline Challenges, with winners receiving either a gourmet fruit basket or two dozen red roses delivered in person th the NCPP Quit-Tobacco team. September is the "Get Started" Challenge, which encourages hospitals that have not begun utilizing QuitlineNC as a counseling and follow up resource to start faxing in referrals. To coincide with the Great American Smokeout in November, the hospital with the highest percentage of accepted Quitline services wins. January's Challenge recognizes three hospitals with the highest number of fax referrals to QuitlineNC. The large, medium, and small hospitals are recognized for their success. Finally, March is the multi-call challenge, which rewards the hospital with the highest percentage of calls that result in tobacco users setting a quit date.
The winning large, medium and small-sized hospitals that have the highest performance over the course of the year receive special plaques and recognition at the Annual Meeting.
