WorkHealthy AmericaSM FAQs
What is WorkHealthy AmericaSM?
WorkHealthy AmericaSM is a signature product of NC Prevention Partners, developed to help employers create healthy workplaces. It is an evidence-based health prevention program built on 4 areas of focus: Culture of Wellness (leadership strategy),Tobacco environment , Nutrition and Physical Activity policies and practices. The program package contains an online survey tool, reports and prevention resources. The survey measures organization-level indicators of workplace wellness, and then bestows a grade based on the policies, benefits, and environments available for each topic area. With their grades, employers can also gain access to the WorkHealthy AmericaSM resource toolboxes and tailored action plans that serve as a road map to healthy workplace policies. The product is available as a one-year or multiyear licensing opportunity.
What is the cost of WorkHealthy AmericaSM?
The WHA is priced according to the desired level of service, resources, and duration of access. Access to the program and its resources are through a license agreement on an annual basis. Multiple year terms are available. Individual and group purchases are available. To discuss options for your worksite, contact Anne Thornhill at anne@ncpreventionpartners.org, or by phone at (919) 969-7022, ext. 203.
How can I sign up?
Any employer or business can register to take the WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment online at https://www.ncpreventionpartners.org/ncpp/Payment/GettingStarted. After entering your organization’s name, your name, and your email address, you will be asked to choose a product (ie: package of resources—Click here for a list of available products), a payment method and enter an access code, if applicable. Employer groups (or groups that represent large numbers of employers, such as coalitions, health plans, chambers of commerce, insurance brokers, etc.) should contact Anne Thornhill at anne@ncpreventionpartners.org or (919) 969-7022, ext. 203 to discuss group pricing for the Assessment.
What is an access code? How do I get one?
An access code is for participants whose WHA account has already been paid for either by their CEO, health insurance carrier, or corporate office. Oftentimes a large company will pay for each of their branch offices to take the Assessment and get individual grades. Upper Management can access these grades to identify their neediest offices and optimize intervention. If you are a part of a larger organization, or you believe you may have an access code, contact Anne Thornhill to discuss this approach. She can be reached at anne@ncpreventionpartners.org or by phone at (919) 969-7022, ext. 203.
What can my organization do to get an "A"?
• Promote healthy behaviors and educate employees about how to achieve healthy lives.
• Establish healthy worksite policies.
• Provide easy access to healthy foods, opportunities or facilities for physical activity, and clean air.
• Offer preventive health insurance benefits.
• Model healthy living through company events, communications, and a culture of wellness.
Can I see sample reports?
Yes. Click here to see a sample executive summary report available to participants.
What are included in the toolboxes?
There are three WorkHealthy Assessment Toolboxes: Physical Activity, Nutrition and Tobacco. Inside each toolbox you will find the tools and resources you need to develop robust wellness policies and environments. You will find the following in our Toolboxes:
- Timelines for implementation
- Sample Policies
- Sample Media Communications

- Visual examples of Marketing products, Signage, Pricing Incentives and other Worksite Wellness components
- Ways to partner with your healthcare provider, partner organizations and community
Who developed the toolboxes and how?
NC Prevention Partners is a statewide leader in reducing preventable illness and early death in North Carolina caused by tobacco use, poor nutrition, physical inactivity and obesity. The recommendations in our toolboxes are culled from evidence-based literature and our experience guiding organizations of all sizes towards effective and cost-saving wellness programs. The materials within are updated and enhanced on an on-going basis to be able to share current best practices.
Can I contact program managers?
Program Managers are available for brief clarification on our recommendations or action steps; connections to similar businesses in your area, industry, or size; and to discuss continuing ways NCPP can help your worksite become healthier.
Program Managers are available for personalized consultation on a fee for service basis. If you are interested in wellness consultancy services from our public health and policy professionals, please contact Anne Thornhill at anne@ncpreventionpartners.org, or by phone at (919) 969-7022, ext. 203.
Do you have case studies I can read?
Yes, each toolbox has multiple case studies on many topics pertaining to creating and maintaining healthy worksites.
Why are you supporting these specific worksite wellness policy recommendations? Where is the research to back this up?
The questions in the Work Healthy AmericaSM Assessment are based on the CDC’s Guide to Community Preventive Services, the Healthy People 2010 definition of comprehensive worksite wellness; the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services; as well as other national guidelines. The questions represent “gold standards” for policies in each of the topic areas. All of our recommendations are research-based; garnered from scholarly publications, peer-reviewed journals, and clinical research.
Why do you need all of that demographic information in the Participant Profile?
To provide you with the tools and resources to address your worksite’s wellness environment, we need to know about the size of your organization and about the work you do. Each organization is different and tailoring your wellness program to the size and culture of your company will make it the most effective it can be in reducing illness and increasing productivity among employees. This basic information will also allow you to compare your organization to companies or agencies of similar size, industry, and location.
How do I access the Healthy Recipe Database?
The Healthy Recipe Database is one of the tools we showcase within our Nutrition Toolbox. In order to access any of the toolboxes, you must have a WHA account. Click here to set up an account.

WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment FAQs
What is the WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment?
The Work Healthy AmericaSM Assessment is an online survey that measures how well an employer supports employees to be healthy at work. The Assessment looks at healthy workplace policies on nutrition, tobacco, and physical activity. Employers can take the Assessment as many times as they would like (though we recommend waiting at least 6 months between assessments), receive a grade for each topic area, and gain access to toolboxes with pertinent resources to make your worksite healthier.
Why is the WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment useful?
Healthy workplace practices encourage employees to be healthy and, in turn, healthy employees work better by being more productive and save you money. The WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment is designed to help you identify and promote opportunities for healthy practices within your workplace.
It will enable you to:
• Evaluate your organization’s current nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco use policies and environments.
• Empower wellness staff with data to build a stronger case for wellness programs.
• Help your organization build or strengthen workplace policies, leadership capacity, and organizational structure to support healthy behaviors.
• Access hands-on action plans and tools that can improve your worksite and employee health.
• Measure your organization’s progress over time and in comparison to companies of similar size, industry, and location.
How long will the Assessment take to complete?
There are 3 sections of the Assessment and each section should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.
Who should answer Assessment questions?
The WorkHealthy AmericaSM Assessment questions cover a range of business policies and practices. Ideally, someone familiar with your company’s policies, practices and benefits could answer the survey questions. If your company has a wellness team, these questions can be answered by key members of that team such as representatives from:
- Human Resources
- Security and Grounds
- Administration
- Foodservice
I don't have time to finish these questions now. Can I save my answers and return later?
If you do not have time to answer all of the questions in one sitting, or you do not know all of the answers, you can skip questions and/or log in later to complete the Assessment. To do so, leave the question blank and click “Next Question.” You will be asked to verify that you are consciously skipping that question.
When you log back into your Assessment Home Page, click on “Complete this Module” in the “My Current Assessment” table. You will then be able to choose which skipped questions you wish to answer.
Remember that you will not receive a grade for that section until you complete each of the questions and submitted your answers for grading. Once you have submitted your answers for grading you cannot go back and change them.
I don't know the answers to all of these questions. Can more than one person from my organization answer questions in the same Assessment?
The questions in the Assessment cover three distinct prevention areas—healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco. We recommend that you answer these questions in a group with your entire wellness team.
You may have more than one person log into your WHA account to answer questions if you cannot all meet at the same time to do them together. However, we limit each worksite to one account (i.e., one login/password). We do this because the data that is generated from the Assessment is organized according to the account holder, and so if an organization has more than one account, it will disrupt the data collection and give you a false score.
If you have more than one staff member that you would like to be able to answer the Assessment questions, we ask that you register with one username and password and share your login information with staff members. In the future, you will be able to determine which of your employees has permission to answer assessment questions and which has permission to view reports, action plans, and toolboxes, all from your home page.
Can I take the Assessment again?
Yes, there is no limit to how many times you may take an assessment. However, we suggest that you wait at least 3 months between assessments as that will give you a more noticeable change in your grades if your wellness committee has been active in the interim.
Who sees our responses?
NC Prevention Partners will not share individual reports or grades for any company without express written permission of that company. NCPP will compile and share aggregate information to help paint a picture of the health of North Carolina’s workforce. This population data will be available on NCPP’s website and through its online, interactive map (available in mid-2010).
Why are some of the questions automatically skipped?
Questions about large-scale wellness practices are followed with questions regarding the components that make up that practice. If a user answers “NO” to the larger umbrella question, then they will be automatically routed away from questions regarding component parts.
For example, if a user answers “NO” to a question about whether they counsel all tobacco-using staff, the Assessment will automatically skip the question that asks how they counsel tobacco-using staff to quit.
How was the grading scale determined?
You will receive a grade for each section of the Assessment on an A to F scale. However, not all of the questions count towards your grade. The database only grades questions about whether or not your organization has a policy or environmental support that is an evidence-based gold standard for worksite wellness. Questions regarding how that policy or support is implemented are not graded. Those answers are instead used to generate action plan steps based on our experience in designing award-winning wellness interventions across the state.
Based on your answers, the database determines how many of the total core components of wellness your organizations meets for each section, and then translates that ratio into a letter grade for that section. You will be able to see which questions were graded on your organization’s grade report once you complete the Assessment.
