What is the Preventive Benefits Profile?
The Preventive Benefits Profile is a web-based profile of the preventive health insurance benefits offered by NC private and public health plans. Currently, NC Prevention Partners tracks counseling and medication benefits for tobacco use, physical activity, nutrition, obesity, hypertension and cholesterol management, diabetes, and pre-diabetes.

The Preventive Benefits Profile shows preventive health benefits for the most popular benefits packages offered by NC health plans, as well as other riders, access products, incentives, or discount programs offered by each of the health insurers.  The Preventive Benefits Profile is continuously updated to keep track of the major insurers’ latest products and benefits.

The information appearing on the site has been voluntarily submitted by the North Carolina health insurance organizations referenced on the site.

Who benefits from the Preventive Benefits Profile?

  1. Employers can use the Preventive Benefits Profile in conjunction with the “Healthy Employees Create Healthy Businesses: A Guide to Help Employers Reduce Health Care Costs” to determine how to best partner with their health insurer in choosing a benefits package that improves health and controls cost.
  2. Brokers and third party administrators can learn about innovations to share with their clients.
  3. Health insurers benefit by offering the highest value services to their customers.
  4. Consumers benefit by learning about the preventive benefits offered by their health plan.

What is the history of the Preventive Benefits Profile?
Tobacco use, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity account for 2/3 of all preventable deaths and disability in NC. Of adult North Carolinians, 95.9% have at least one of these risky behaviors, while 39.1% have all three. These risk factors contribute to heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and many more diseases that ultimately lead to nearly 200,000 hospitalizations and 35,000 deaths per year in NC.  NC Prevention Partners brought together employers, regulators, health plans, and the public health and healthcare community to create a healthcare system that includes the basic ingredients of good health: tobacco cessation, proper nutrition, and physical activity in disease prevention and management with the Building Alliances with Health Systems to Integrate Preventive Care (BASIC) Preventive Insurance Benefit Initiative beginning in 1999.  The Preventive Benefits Profile was an outcome of the BASIC Initiative.
